Slow/erratic response to touchpad buttons

G

Guest

I am running XP SP2 on an HP Pavilion (ZE4530) Notebook. Sometime after
installing SP2 (I think, may have been just before), my touchpad buttons got
wierd. It seems like if I don't use the buttons (problem seems restricted to
the buttons, touchpad area is OK, pointer response is normal) XP lowers the
priority or poll rate. On startup, when the select account screen comes up,
if I put the pointer on a button and press it lightly, it may take 5 seconds
before the system recognizes that the button is pushed. After I have been
using the buttons frequently, the response is normal, but if I don't click
anything for 30 seconds or so, the response gets slow again. If I hold the
button down while on a shortcut on the quick launch bar it may be several
seconds before the button changes color to indicate it is pressed, but then
multiple copies of the app will open. I have downloaded and installed the
latest touchpad driver. If I just click normally when the response is slow,
the machine doesn't see it. HELP?

try device manager and also ring up your tech support

DEVICE MANAGER

To access device manager right click on my computer and then go to
properties. Then navigate to the hardware tab and click on device manager. It
will then populate a list of devices connected to your computer. Click on the
device that is causing you problems and right click on it and then click
uninstall. Once you have uninstalled it, restart your computer. Then it will
rediscover the new device. Use driver for it off the manufacturers website
(when you install the driver).

Hope this helps

Cheers

Al, it is doubtful that this problem relates to the OS. More likely it is a
hardware problem.

Quentin - I don't know what level you are, or what level you think I am, but
I thought I stated I had installed the latest driver. Seems that would
indicate that I had been in device manager and checked for any appropriate
settings. BTW, I didn't see one that says respond quickly sometimes and
slowly at others.

And tech support? USELESS. In the past I have found this forum and others
like it to be the BEST source of information. So I did eveything I knew how
to do and then I posted, hoping to get some useful help.

Thanks for your suggestion. I will try a plug-in mouse tonight. But the
variable nature of the problem suggested to me that it was a software
problem. I'll let you know..

Thanks again,

Actually Al, when you have a random, variable problem the cause is
almost always hardware. If your HP notebook is still under warranty,
send it in for fixing. You can't fix a touchpad/keyboard yourself.

Good luck,

Looks like it was hardware. I plugged in an external mouse and everything
was back to normal. I thought it was software becaues it looked like the
system was too busy to service the mouse clicks.

Good news is I do have an extended warranty. Off it goes for repair.....

Thanks to all who helped.

You have to watch out for Quintin, the village idiot.
He compulsively cuts and pastes the same two answers to many posts. Don't
know what drives him...

Do not follow any advice the village IDIOT Quintin posts. This also applies
to Andrew E, who may be one and the same Quintin. The replies these two
posters send to the newsgroups clearly classify them as newsgroup
terrorists. They post what seems as innocuous advice that is very harmful if
followed.

You are most welcome. Thanks for taking the time to let us know how it
all came out.

New concept for me.)

BTW great pic!

Quintin was a naive wannabe, but Andrew E is a NG Terrorist. He will give
good advice and then out of the blue give such bad advice it can only be
given with malicious intent. Rule of the thumb anyone should get a second
opinion before following anything Andrew E suggests.

BTW, what pic are you refereeing to? <G>
