Setup hangs on hardware check

I am trying to repair the installation of XP Home on my
computer. The problem is that when trying to boot from
the CD setup gets as far as the floppy drive when
checking hardware and then hangs. If the floppy drive is
disconnected, setup just hangs.
I've tried different CD players with the same result.
Any ideas?

Sounds like it might be more than the CDROM, have you tried removing all
unneeded hardware from the machine and then installing again?
