XP Installation Setup

To anyone who can help out
I upgraded a system with some new components as follows

Asus A7N8X-E Mobo (very current)
Athlon 3000+ Processor
1 GB Memory
64MB ATI AGP Video
120 GB Western Digital Caviar
The old hardware is a DVD burner,a CD-RW, a floppy
and a 80GB Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 9
Windows XP Home (new in wrapper)

The setup is as follows Maxtor(master) WD (slave)
DVD burner (master on secondary) CD-RW (slave on secondary)
The bios recognizes them all in the right configuration
and the bios is set to boot from cd-rom first.
My problem is that after copying some initial files, the
system hangs at the point on the blue screen where it
says "Setup is starting Windows".I had reformatted the
Maxtor drive before using in this configuration, and also
configured and tried each drive as a single drive in the
system but i still get the problem.Tried another XP
disk, downloaded the setup for creating 6 floppies to load
from dos, also tried the Setup XP from dos procedure from
Microsoft, but i get the same thing. The procedure from dos
does copy some files which takes a few minutes,at which
point it completes and says the dos portion of setup is
complete,after reboot,Windows will continue setup.After
reboot, the system hangs at the same point.Shecked and
rechecked all mobo settings, etc.Any suggestions before i
age prematurely would be greatly appreciated.

You need to boot to xp cd,select install xp at the info page, new copy, then delete ol
partition of xp,if the hd has one, then the drive is formatted, then xp is installed
The old copy of xp wont work in the new enviroment (mb).

Thanks for the reply Andrew, but i guess i didn't explain
it clearly enough. The XP CD was new,and the system never
had XP before,it was running Win98 on an old 20MB(the boot
drive, and it also had the 80 GB Maxtor as a slave
drive .Having the bios set to boot from the CD first, the
system does it's checks, then you see the message "booting
from cd" at which point it starts reading files off the
cd.I have loaded Win98/Me from scratch at least a hundred
times on other pc's after formatting a drive, but this is
my first XP install.I never reach a point where i set up
the partitions.I saw the sequence to load XP on another
site(with pictures of the install screens),and what i am
not getting is to the point where you hit ENTER on the
blue setup screen in order to continue after it loads some
initial files(i have to assume it didn't finish reading
all the files needed,it just hangs for some reason.Tried
it using both the dvd and cd-rw.Stumped and sleepless in
Brooklyn.
