SENDING A FAX

M

Mary C.

I have XP PRO. I set up the fax operation according to instructions. I do
have a DSL line. Everytime I send a fax I receive "does not answer." I am
sending to the same area code and have tried it many ways with area code,
without area code, etc. For example, if my number is 773-878-9809 do I put
it in as 878-9809? In looking at your examples I have seen different ways.
I know it is set up correctly as I get the fax monitor, etc.

I assume I am missing some small part and would appreciate any assistance.

Thank you.

You can't send a fax with Windows FAX via a DSL modem. You have to use an
analogue modem which can be of the internal or external type..

If you have a dsl line, you'll need to put a filter on the phone modem
you're using for the fax operation. As Mike Hall stated, you can't use
the dsl modem to phone a fax number.

If the same area code, you'd put in 878-9809 (in the example above).

That actually won't help you, and is an indication that you don't have a fax
modem.

You need a POTS line, "Plain Old Telephone System", just what your phone
connects to. Plug the fax-modem into that line, with the DSL filters in
place.

Do you actually have a fax modem, that isn't a dsl modem? You must have
an analog fax modem, and DSL modems are not the same thing at all and won't
work.

Be sure that the fax modem is installed properly to Windows and responds to
its tests.

Also, almost everywhere now, you need to use ten-digit dialing, so yes, you
need the complete number with area code.
