Send Immediately When Connected

J

Jeremy Curtis

I have Windows XP Home edition and do not connect to an
exchange server etc. My email works simply through ISp
dial-up. I have just moved to Outlook 2002 from Outlook
2000. In 2000 this feature worked fine.

Now I find that when I send an email AND I am connecte to
my ISP (by modem) the email won't go out of the Outbox. I
have to press the Send/Receive button to initiate the
send/receive process.

Under Tools - Options - Email Setup I have the Send
immediately When Connected option ticked

Under the Send/Receive group configuration I have all but
one of my Accounts disabled. The Account i do have
ENabled is ticked for "Include Account in this
send/receive group" with both "send mail items"
and "receive mail items" checked.

I only have one group "all accounts" and under the
settings for all account I have checked "Include this
group in send/receive (F9)" for both Online and Offline
options.

I always work with File - Work Offline ticked.

Can anyone help? This is really bugging me!! ...and
Outlook 2000 worked great. If I sent an email when I was
connected to my ISP it just got sent automatically
straight away.

Thanks,
Jeremy Curtis

This would be the expected behavior when you Work Offline.
Why would you do that?

Thanks for your response, much appreciated. In answer to your question...

Well... I found yesterday when I was moving everything across from Outlook 2000 that if I didn't have Work offline ticked then everytime I send an email when I'm not connected it trys to send - the Send/Receive window pops up and straight away gives me an error. (See below

Task 'pop3.zoom.co.uk - Sending' reported error (0x80042109) : 'Outlook is unable to connect to your outgoing (SMTP) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).

....by trial and error I found that Working Offline fixed this. Incidentally I never had to work offline in Outlook 2000

Anyway, now I don't get the error - but my emails don't send immediately when connected. Any ideas now?! Perhaps the problem is that Outlook tries to send them when i'm not connected

They way I want to work is to compose emails whilst not connected, let them go into my Outbox (without doing anything else) then just press send/receive to initiate a dialup to my ISP to send all my emails in one go. BUT if I am connected and send an email I don't want to have to press send/receive - I want it to go straight away. This worked fine for me in Outlook 2000.

Nothing has changed in Outlook 2002. You need to realize that Work Offline
has nothing to do with your Internet connection status. It refers to your
status with Exchange Server, which of course you are not using if you are
dialing up to a SMTP/POP3 server.
Outlook is unaware of your Internet Connection status until such time as you
try to send a message. If you are not connected to your mail server when you
try to send a message, Outlook will then try to connect unless you have told
it that you want to remain offline by ticking the Work Offline status.
What determines Outlook's behavior with regard to dialing depends on whether
you have set an automatic polling interval and what connection type you have
set for your mail account: Phone Line, LAN, or 3rd Party dialer. Those are
the settings you have most likely changed in this installation.
