Outlook 2003 does not send immediately

Windows XP latest service pack
connected via ethernet to Verizon FIOS modem
Outlook 2003

When I compose an e-mail and hit SEND the message is not sent, it ends
up in my OUTBOX. If I open the Outbox and hit Send/receive the message
is sent.

What do I change so that the SEND button causes the message to be SENT
more or less immediately.

Note: Pogue's Missing Manual for Windows XP (page 396) states that there
is a box in the TOOLS/Options/Send tab but my TOOL/OPTIONS does not have
the same tabs that show in Pogue's book.

Also when I hit Send/Receive I get an alert 623 that I can't find a
phone book entry for my non existent Modem (while the contents of the
OUTBOX are being sent - and received on the recipients computer - and
transferred to the SENT folder). I'd like to get rid of the alert.

Yes I Googled the problem but none of the responses seemed to fit

Any suggestions

I'm not sure on the modem issue - Is it set on the Connection tab in the
account properties? tools email accounts, view or change accounts, double
click on the account and then choose More settings, Connection tab.

Outlook MUST be running for it to send anything. You don't say how the
new-mail compose window got opened. If an item is added programatically to
Outlook's Outbox folder, Outlook isn't running to see that event. Since it
doesn't see the event, it doesn't trigger a send operation.

If you start composing an e-mail by clicking on a mailto: link, for example,
only a stub of Outlook gets loaded to handle the new-mail compose function.
When you click Send, that item gets added to the Outbox folder but then
Outlook gets unloaded. Since Outlook isn't running anymore, it isn't
available to send the item. Even when you next load Outlook, the item
remains in the Outbox folder because Outlook doesn't see the move event to
put that item into the Outbox folder *while* Outlook was running.

So if you compose new e-mails that you want sent immediately, you must have
Outlook loaded at the time you click on the Send button in the new-mail
compose window. Also, you need to ensure the "send immediately" option is
enabled; otherwise, the item won't send until the next scheduled mail poll
(assuming that scheduled mail polling is enabled).
Note: Pogue's Missing Manual for Windows XP (page 396) states that there

Meaningless to anyone here. It is highly unlikely that any potential
respondents happen to have the same book. "There is a box" never says WHAT
option you are talking about.
Also when I hit Send/Receive I get an alert 623 that I can't find a

I have never seen that error but then I couldn't understand your
description. "while the contents of the Outbox are being sent - and
received on the recipient's computer" is NOT possible. You do NOT send
e-mails to the recipient's computer. You send your outbound e-mails to YOUR
sending mail server (and then the mail server handles sending your message
to a receiving mail server for the recipient's mailbox which then gets
polled by whatever e-mail client the recipient happens to use).

Outlook doesn't have modems defined in its contact records.

Does Outlook issue the 623 error is it some other application showing that
error message? In the properties for the e-mail account defined in Outlook,
under the Connection tab, what type of connection is configured for use by
that account? Under Internet Options -> Connections, is a dial-up
connectoid identified for use for Internet connectivity? If you are not
using a dial-up connection, is anything enabled under the LAN settings?

This solved it for me:

-Tools/E-mail Accounts
-Choose 'View or change existing e-mail accounts'
-Click Next
-Double click 'Microsoft Exchange Server' (or whatever your mail server name is)
-Click 'More Settings'
-In 'Connection' tab check 'Connect to my Exchange mailbox using HTTP'
-Click 'OK' (takes you back to 'E-mail Accounts' box
-Click 'Next'
-Click 'Finish'
-Restart Outlook

I am not sure on the modem issue - Is it set on the Connection tab in the
