Select names dialog hangs

Has anyone found a solution to the problem with Office XP which causes the
‘Select Names’ dialog to freeze when:

Using Word as the e-mail editor
Click 'To:' in Outlook to create a new e-mail message

I’ve seen this problem on about 4 different machines running Windows XP
(with and without SP2) and Office XP SP3. The workaround is to open Word (if
it’s not already running) or to give the focus to Word if it is - and the
dialog box becomes responsive again (or don't use Word as the e-mail editor)
– but there must be a fix?

I have the same problem, but with only a single user.
The problem follows the user. Recreating the user's roaming profile did not
help. We're using exchange, so could it be an exchange glitch?
Any other solutions found?

Followup:
I resolved the problem by deleting the mailbox and then recreating it. To
save the mailbox contents I exported it from the original mailbox to a pst
file and then imported it to the new mailbox.

Further backrground:
The user had come back from a one year leave when this problem occured. The
mailbox had not been mothballed during this period, so something within the
year of inactivity must have caused the problem.
