Security Update MS06-015 breaks Windows Explorer functionality

G

Guest

The Update for this issue installs a new file called 'Verclsid.exe'.
Verclsid.exe is used to verify a COM object before it is instantiated by
Windows Explorer.

However, Verclsid.exe also breaks some fuctionality in Windows explorer.
This program does not run always, but when it is running you are unable to
expand folders in the Windows explorer tree view. When you click on the plus
sign next to a folder in the tree view; the busy cursor appears, but the
folder never expands. However, if you kill the Verclsid.exe application with
Task Manager, the folder(s) you've tried to expand will immediately do so the
instant Verclsid.exe stops running. And when it is not running, Explorer
expands folders normally.

I've done some further testing, and Verclsid.exe appears to break even more
functionality in both Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer. In Windows
Explorer, I've had the send to menu completely stop working while
Verclsid.exe is running, but it works fine the instant Verclsid.exe is
killed. And in Internet Explorer, the address bar stops working. You can
type an address into it and press enter, but IE won't navigate to the entered
page until you kill Verclsid.exe.

I've tried waiting for up to 5 minutes to see if folders will expand or IE
will navigate to an entered page while Verclsid.exe is running; but no such
luck. Nothing happens until you kill Verclsid.exe. Once it is not running
everything works just fine.

And the bad part about it is that it seems to restart itself randomly, and
sometimes it even starts multiple instances of itself. And without knowing
exactly what it is supposed to do, I don't feel safe renaming or deleting it
so it won't run anymore.

Well, I've installed the same update on three different PCs
and all are functioning fine. I would suggest the following:

1. Uninstall the KB908531 update and reboot your PC.
2. Perform a Disk Cleanup.
3. Perform a Checkdisk (error-checking).
4. Download and install the update manually, then reboot.

I have this problem too. I bet more people will report the same issue
pretty soon. How come those people do not do a thorough test before
releasing the so-called critical patches? Is there any email address at
miscrosoft that I can scream at?

With the latest Windows updates (today 04.11.06) when I type in the url line
it doesn't recognize www.yahoo.com yet if I type yahoo in the Google search
I will get the www.yahoo.com (crazy). Works for MSN also. However my
favorites seem to be working. Any one else having this problem?

I have this same problem of Windows Explorer not working properly after
today's update from Microsoft. How do we uninstall KB908531? It does
not show up in the install/uninstall part of Control Panel.

thanks

As you have learned NEVER install these updates the day they are released!
Always let someone else test them for you :)
Try doing a system restore to a time before the last updates were installed.

I plan on doing the email thang. Thanks for the link. I noticed on our two
machines here you cannot save Word or Excel document with first ending the
verclsid.exe process. Wacky!

My wife does much work from home for her boss and saving files is now a
drag! (or lag thereof)

Bill

I must be way tired. Very poor writing on the last post. To clarify, the
problem we noticed is we cannot save Word or Excel files "without" first
ending the verclsid.exe process.

I also noticed that IE does not access websites sometimes without first
ending the process. As a test, we sent to www.cnn.com. The browser did
nothing until I ended the process.

BTW, I've sent a note off to the link Carey posted.

Bill

I can't comment on "verclsid.exe" because I did not discover it and
currently don't have MS06-015 (KB908531) installed, but when I did have
it installed, I consistently got the busy cursor when I right clicked
the desktop.

Though I never discovered "verclsid.exe", I went through various
scenarios involving installing the update, uninstalling the update, and
restoring the system. I'm quite confident that the update causes the
busy cursor on my system when the desktop is right clicked.

I am having the same issue when I right click on the desktop Windows XP Pro
hangs until I kill "clversid.exe". I have already applied the fix below
(which is geared to HP products) and I don't believe I have the HP products
the fix is suppose to resolve.

Anyways, I added the registry keys and I'm still having the same problem.
Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!
