Explorer and Excel hangs

I just wanted to share this to hopefully save someone hours of trouble.

This applies to a machine with Windows XP Pro, Service Pack 2 and a
recent Windows update (update # 908531).

Symptom:
When trying to open a file in Excel or trying to browse the file system
with Explorer.exe they both hang... forever. I had to use the Task
Manager to close them.

What I tried:
1. Ran Spyware Doctor - it found 1 suspicious file which turned out to
be nothing bad.
2. Stopped the SSDP Discovery Service (per suggestion from another web
site) - had no effect.
3. Logged in as a different user (per suggestion from another web site)
- had no effect
4. Called Dell's tech support - paid $99.00 to find out this problem is
caused by a Microsoft Windows Update on 04/21/2006. According to tech
support, Windows update # 908531 causes Word, Excel and Windows
Explorer to hang when trying to open a file.

According to Tech Support, there are numerous resolutions but we go
lucky and found the fix on the first try.
These are the steps we performed:

* Search for a file named verclsid.exe (my search produced 4 files)
and write down the location of the file(s).

* If the search found one or more of the verclsid.exe files then go to
Start, Run and type:
tskill verclsid (this kills the process so that it/they can be
deleted).

* Delete all instances of verclsid.exe.

That was it - problem solved - good luck.

If you had taken the time to read through the messages posted on this
newsgroup in the last few days, you could have saved yourself some time,
money and received an automated fix for this problem.
