KB908531 - just uninstall it

A

Alain Dekker

Just to let anyone from Microsoft know (and anybody else having problems
with Explorer after installing this update), I've finally had to uninstall
KB908531. Some wierd process called verclsid.exe was running every time I
tried to copy a file or see the properties of the desktop and several other
actions. Almost invariably, Windows XP would lock up and I'd have to use
CTRL-ALT-DEL and Task Manager to kill off various processes, including
Explorer.exe and verclsid.exe.

After uninstalling, things work like they did before. Can you please take
more care of the "security" updates. This one is a pile of s**t.

Perhaps the following will explain & resolve your issue:

Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell
after you install security update MS06-015
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165

Easy Fix: Visit http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and scroll
down to Item No. 383 "Hewlett-Packard's Share-to-Web software - Fix (MS06-015)"
to download a registry fix.

Note: You may need to temporarily disable your antivirus program
in order to safely run the scripted fix.

Also, review the following:

Perhaps the following will explain & resolve your issue:

Perhaps, but what about the possibility that MS will post a
revised version of 908531 that doesn't have these problems,
and doesn't require jumping through hoops to fix them?

Is it just assumed here that Microsoft is going to leave
this the way it is? I haven't installed it in the first
place, and don't intend to until I read here that a working
version is available that doesn't require going to some
non-MS site to upload a registry fix.

Am I being completely unreasonable to expect that MS will
fix this problem?

Given the facts that this [insert your favorite descriptive noun here]
happened last week, that there has been a great deal of comment about it, in
many different online forums, and that the news from this morning is that "HP
and Nvidia have updated drivers to address the problems with their [!!]
software" [although I haven't seen anything on hp's site], I'd guess that
you've seen all that MS intends to do about dealing with this issue.

Hi All
For whatever it's worth, I took this posters' advice and uninstalled
KB908531 without checking it out first, and the computer went "BLANK",
"KAPUT". I had to search for a way back to booting, in order to be able to
perform a repair install to get it working again. No offense Alain. It
probably would work for someone else but it didn't in my case. But I did
notice oddly enough that KB908531 was no longer on the add/remove list after
doing the repair install.
Computer working fine now.

Certainly happy you recovered, but this has to be the first I've
heard of /uninstalling/ a CU killing a PC.

Its more than likely that MS will not revise this version - that is why the
link to Kelly's Korner has a fix.
I have been told in an earlier thread that one can 'trust everything' in
Kelly's Korner.

Since I don't want this to happen to me, let me ask this question:

When I try to remove "Security Update for Windows XP (KB908531)" it says,
"Setup detected the following programs on your computer:
Update for Windows XP (KB900485)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB911562)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB912812)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB913580)
Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications (KB905474)
Windows Live Safety Scanner
…
If KB908531 is removed, these programs might not run properly. Do you want
to continue?

What should I do?
