Search options - Knowledge Base option has disappeared

The option to search the Knowledge Base in Help and Support has disappeared,
both from the search screen and the search options. All that appears is a
single tick box - but it doesn't search anywhere.

The only thing I have done today is to automatically install the two updates
that automatically were offered to me.

Anyone got any ideas?

The problem can be narrowed down to user account settings, as logging on as
another user, or creating a new account solves the problem - or the problem
does not exist there. It would appear to a corruption of some sort within the
specific user's settings. The same problem now exists on two seperate
machines.

Some time after installing SP2, and more recently the two updates to SP2, I
encountered the same problem. By the way, after the last two critical
updates, I cannot recover to a point before the updates, which obviates that
route to restore HELP search of the Knowledge Base.

I think that if you look at HELP, Set Search Options, you may see that the
last item on the right hand side has a check box, but there is not
information beside the check box. That is the area where the information
about the Microsoft Knowledge Base should show up, but instead it is blank.

I have been trying to track down an html file or xml file that may be the
culprit. I have done /sfc but the error is not in a monitored system file, so
this did not help.
I entered a help request on Microsoft back on the 14'th, but they must be
busy... no response from them yet.

I have found the solution to this problem.
It was posted by another person on this Newsgroup.
1. Set your folder view to show hidden files and folders.
2. Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\[your profile]\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\HelpCtr
and delete... (the XML file only) in this folder
3. Open Help and Support and try again.

..................... Your HELP search functions should work normally.
