Help & Support Centre Always Shows Zero Knowledge Base Results

I've recently noticed that if I search for anything in the Help & Support
Centre, I always receive zero results for the Microsoft Knowledge Base
section.

It's not that often that I use it, so it's not possible to say when it
stopped working and hence what happened to cause it.

Please note that the remedy for this does not lie in the 'set search
options' section. The 'Microsft Knowledge Base' box has always been ticked.
Removal of the tick results in the removal of the Microsoft Knowledge Base
pane from the Search Results section.

Ticking the box results in the Microsoft Knowledge Base pane re-appearing
beneath the Suggested Topics and Full-Text Search Matches panes, but it
always shows (and contains) zero results whatever the search topic.

I have disabled my firewall and the results are just the same.

There are no problems with the 'Suggested Topics' and 'Full-Text Search
Matches' results.

My network is working OK and I can access the Internet with no problems.
Windows Update works OK and all of the other programmes which access the
Internet in the background (AV updates etc)also work OK.

I would be grateful if anyone could offer any suggestions.

Many thanks.

hiya ,
click on start then run and type

regsvr32 HHCTRL.OCX

(to make sure its typed right : copy and paste the above)

and click ok , this will then re-register this file that for some strange
reason XP service pack 2 unregisters in the first place.

if that doesnt work let me know and theres another way of doin it.

Thanks for that. I thought it would work cos I got a message saying it had
been successfully registered but when I tried it there was no change.

Just to be sure, I restarted the pc but still no change.

On to plan B?

Regards.

Yes, I've got some others at home. Does it matter if they are running Pro
or not? (The faulty one is running Pro)

no it should work :
as a precaution make a system restore point first: ok...
go to another computer running xp , and go to its drive with windows on ,
(usually C:) in there go in to the WINDOWS folder then PCHealth Folder in
there go to HELPCtr folder in there go to the Config Folder and then finally
the News Folder and hopefully there should be to files in there ,the files
will be of a XML extension , one being called NEWSHEADLINES_1033_pro.....and
the other being called NEWSVER .
copy them two to the exact location on the pc where it is not workin and for
good luck restart it.

see if that works:D

Can you tell me what the two files are that I need to copy?

Many thanks.
