Screen resolution changes with Excell 2000

I have my resolution set at 1024 X678. Whenever I open a Excell 2000 worksheet the screen goes black and the resolution automatically changes to 600 X 800. I go to Display setting in Display Properties and change it back to 1024 X 678. I hit apply and ok to save the settings. I also hit save on the Excell worksheet. However, when I open Excell at a later date the problem repeats itself.
