Cannot change screen resolution

I have a barebones PC with and Asrock K1078N motherboard running 4 AMD
processors it has on-board graphincs Nvidia 8200.
I am on XP professional SP3
I have just installed a Nvidia 9600GSO but the display will not go above 600
x 480
Whenever i try to change the display/resolution using the display function
the screen flashes as if to say it has changed (when the resolution stays at
600 x 480) and if I accept the changes I am still left with 600 x 480.
My video drivers are uptodate (the latest release 185 from nvidia installed)
I have also disabled on board graphics to use my new card as primary adapter
and selected the resolution from 'show all modes' in the adapter settings.

My BIOS is uptodate.

Any suggestions

Did the resolution change properly with the onboard graphics? 600 x 480
is NOT a standard resolution, I would suspect that something is wrong
with the "new" adapter you installed.
