Screen resolution problem

My wife's computer has been set on 800 x 600 resolution by default
since we had the computer. Yesterday, my kids were on the computer
playing some games and now the screen resolution is enormous. The
settings say it is still 800 x 600 but it looks like it is in the 640
x 480 range. When I change to other screen resolutions, they look
correct but again when I go back to 800 x 600, it goes back to being
gigantic. Not sure what to do.

Were the icons and text sizes changed?

Download and install the latest video card driver from the video card driver
manufacturer as well.

Just a WAG (Wild Assed Guess): don't set to 800x600.

And what did the children change? That is, the possibilities are the
display card settings, the monitor size settings and/or both. One way
to resolve this would be to re-set the monitor to its physical default
according to its factory specifications and then adjust the video card
settings through its own Windows applet or Display through Control Panel.

I believe you are misunderstanding.
It is possible to change the DPI as well as just the ICON and TEXT sizes.
This is beyond changing just the screen resolution.

Personally - I believe you were probably at 1024x768 with large fonts and
large icons (or increased DPI) and not 800x600 with normal sized items. It
is rare to find that resolution these days.

What size is your monitor?
Is it a CRT (tube) or LCD (flatscreen)?
Who originally setup the resolution for you?

800x600 is 800x600 no matter what. The only thing that could make things
look more crowded is having the large icons/large fonts/120 DPI settings set
at that resolution.

What about the installation of the latest driver from the hardware
manufacturer?
