Scandisk doesn't start automatically/on improper shutdown/ goes to safe mode

My last post on 11/20/04 I may have said it wrong.


On my friends computer if it gets shut down for a power interuption, or some
reason a Control/Alt/Del. When the computer restarts it comes up in safe
mode.
It doesn't matter which one you hit, it comes back to the safe mode options?
I can use my Winxp to get into recovery mode and do a chkdsk, and it seems
to cure the problem. He had to shut the computer down or it got unplugged
and the same problem happened.

What I am thinking that when it comes back up for some reason it isn't doing
scandisk automatically? So it goes back too the safe mode screen. I seem to
recall there is a box somewhere in xp that if the system gets shut down to
do an auto scandisk on startup? I am wondering if this got unchecked?
What I meant in looping on safe mode in my previous post, that you hit the
option in safe mode it seems to start, then goes back to the safe mode
selection screen. I didn't mean it just looped on its own.

You might find an 'autocheck' entry (value) that can be corrupted at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session
Manager\BootExecute
You can delete it, if present

every time i run disk cleanup only 3 bars appear and it just freezes and
does not go forward. My hard disk is not near half full. It just freeezes,
