can't start in safe mode

I have Windows XP, I am trying to start in safe mode. Help says to hit
"start" then "shut down". There is no "shut down", only logoff and turn off
computer. Those tabs don't give you an option to choose safe mode. How do I
get into safe mode if there is no "shut down" on my start menu?

Well, you could do one of two things. One is to go to Start, Run, and
type MSCONFIG and press enter. Then, on the boot.ini tab, select
/SAFEBOOT. Then choose Apply, OK, and say yes when it asks to restart the
system, or just restart it. Subsequent restarts will be in Safe Mode until
you go back into msconfig and remove that setting. You can run msconfig in
safe mode.

Or, you could press F8 as the system starts to get to the boot menu. This
can be a little tricky to get to, and sometimes the msconfig route is
easier.

I would also look into WHY you don't have a Restart , Turn Off or StandBy
button when chosing Turn off Computer.

Are you in Windows XP CLassic mode or Enhanced with Welcome Screen?

-pk, I picked up the thread, I get into Safe Mode ok using the above
mentioned MSCONFIG,
but I see no RUN when I hit START in SAFE MODE.

BIOS by hitting DELETE either(for what it's worth). I changed keyboards,
but to no avail.
