XP won't start after XP security automatic update

computer was shut down in middle of XP security automatic update, now it
won't start - even in safe mode or last known good config.

Do I need to use a boot disk at this point ?

Are you very sure you cannot start your computer in Safe Mode? If you
can boot into 'Safe Mode with Command Prompt' you can use System Restore.

If you can't boot into Safe Mode things are a lot more complicated. You
can boot to the Recovery Console from your XP install CD, but only if
you have an XP install CD and that CD is at the same service pack as
your XP installation. If you can get to the Recovery Console I would
show the computer to a professional geek unless you feel confident about
working at the command line.

If you can't use the Recovery Console you will most likely have to
backup your data and do a clean install. (That means erasing your hard
disk and reinstalling your system.) I recommend you show the computer to
a professional before you go this route.

Once your computer is back on its feet, and if you feel ready for a
somewhat technical challenge, you can learn about disk imaging software,
which will allow you to restore your computer even when you can't boot
into anything.

When I select Safe Mode (or anything else) I get to Windows splash screen for
a few seconds and then computer restarts... no error message or beeps or
anything.

I'm looking for my XP install CD now... but suspect it may not be at same
service pack that I had installed... I think the hired geek option is what
I'm going to end up doing.

thanks for responding...

The root cause of the restarting may be something relatively simple, but
if you can't get to any kind of Windows interface it's geek time. Best
of luck.

A copy of the Stop Error report might be helpful.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Keep pressing the F8
key during Start-Up and select option - Disable automatic restart on
system failure. Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure.
Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

What is your computer make and model?

Try booting with only keyboard, mouse and monitor connected.

Hope this helps.
