Im using xp home with mcafee. Appearentley picked up a virus while trying to
access verizon yellow pages. Computer immediately shut down and rebooted and
continues to reboot. Tried going to safe mode.. no luck! tried going to
last known config and it finally gets to the log in screen and freezes the
screen. Even tried changing boot order to cd first and figured i would use
win disk to repair or maybe even reinstall windows.....och! won't recognize
a cd-rom?! Any suggestions would be appreciated

try booting with a (any)
windows installation cd
and log into the recovery
console.

at the disk prompt run the
following commands:

chkdsk
fixboot
bootcfg /rebuild

then exit and try to normal
boot again.

here is more info on the
above:

incidentally, virus's are not
always the cause of issues
like the above and sometimes
tuning up your system regularly
will keep it reliable than
with out tuning it up.

Tried to get into my xp installation disk, but no luck. Changed boot
sequence to cd-rom first, but computer goes right to hard drive, i suspect it
thinks it has a good boot on the hard drive. Pretty sure it is a virus
because when I was on that site it wounldn't let me out and as soon as i get
out i start having all these problems. No chance that my machine is not
tuned up, if anything i over do it. I can't run the dos commands cause i
can't get into the recovery console. Any other ideas would definitely be
appreciated. One thing for sure McAfee is out the door!!

ok, you will need to exercise
some mastery here and get
the pc to boot with the cd
or figure out why it is not.

hard rebooting can be an
indication of over heating
or a bad or failing power
supply.

however booting with the cd
is an imperative that is engineered
into all pc's now a days.

so this is the "primary" issue
that you have to focus on and
before working on any other
issues.

unfortunately, i cannot assess
your booting with cd situation
from here or take a look inside
your computer for signs of
overheating.

so you will have to confirm that
you will have to confirm that you
are not experiencing issues with
faulty or failing hard ware and
such issues are not the result
of a infection.

i am not sure how technical you
may be but you will need to
act like a technician, like someone
from the geek squad.

open up the pc and with a flashlight
take a look around inside.

check for loose connections,
check to see that a tiny fan that
is attached to the cpu is spinning,
check for anything melting that may
be coming from the power supply.

also, point a desk fan into the
motherboard and see if the
re booting take a little longer
to engage.

let us know what you discover.

incidentally, boot infections
are not imaginary but with the
anti virals of today infections
like these are not as prevalent.

ironically, there are anti virals
that integrate themselves into
the harddisk boot sector, that
when they become mis configured
the can prevent their users from
booting as well.

Thanks for the reply. checked the internals and everything looked like new.
I hooked up my son's sata dvd player and finally got the installation cd to
boot and got into the recovery console. (chkdsk, and fixboot worked) however
when i went to the do the bootcfg /rebuild i got a blue screen telling me
windows has been shut down! tried several more times and same thing. Ran cd
and selected reinstall windows!! UGH! deleted old petition and made new
petition (about half of the 70 gig hard drive. but when i tried to install
windows i got another blue screen! first one. setup cannot copy the
file hid.dll

second try ......... blue screen Page_fault_In_non_paged_area
third attempt...... blue screen pfn_list_corrupt

??? any ideas.......

well if those two commands
worked, then there is a good
chance that the harddrive is
functioning and error free.

however, something to keep
in mind as a result of reinstalling
an o.s. is that there are some computers
that have specialty downloads
and updated drivers from their
makers.

in regards to those errors you
are receiving, they seem to
point problems with hardware,
and already you have discovered
an issue with the cd device.

its sort of like peeling away the
layers of an onion, you may have
gotten down to the core and the
cause of your initial problems, which
seem to be related to hardware
and not software.

here is more info on those
errors you described:

http://search.live.com/results.aspx?FORM=DNSAS&q=hid.dll

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...-8EB7A22FC6A0&dglist=&ptlist=&exp=&sloc=en-us

as a precaution, you should
never download drivers
unless they are from microsoft
or "the" maker of your pc or
the maker of a the component.

--------------------

keep in mind that the rebooting
of the machine is a definite clue
that you may not have resolved yet.
and because the software method
to resolve rebooting did not work,
then the rebooting can be attributed
to the hardware.

at this time i would take a hard
look at powersupply. it is not
uncommon that they fail.

incidentally you have not
mention what brand of
computer you have.

Would you believe bad memory stick!!!?? I mean i find it very strange that a
memory stick would go bad right at the same time i was surfing and couldn't
get out of an appearent virus add. Kept saying i had several viruses and
that i needed to download this particular software and then Immediately
started downloading without my consent! Anyways i ran dell's system
diagnostics tools and found one of my system memory sticks bad. GO FIGURE!
Thanks for the suggestions.
