Safely Remove Hardware

How do I get the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the notification area?
I have gone to the Startup/Task area menu and checked the notification
listings. I find it under Past Items. How can I get this moved to the current
icon list? What is the file name that launches it? I have tried to find that
with no luck. The problem is I have to pull out my USB sticks and periferals
hot. I don't really want to do that.

Thanks

You can instead have the shortcut on your desktop.

Shortcut path:
%SystemRoot%\System32\RUNDLL32.EXE shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

Icon path:
%SystemRoot%\system32\hotplug.dll

You may need to clean out the Past Items from the notification area and let
Windows rebuild the list.

Keep in mind that when using either procedure you need to shutdown and restart
explorer.exe in Task Manager for the changes to take effect.

Note: You could also place a shortcut on the Quick Launch Toolbar that runs this
command.

%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

Good luck

This only appears in the system tray when you have a device connected that
must be stopped before you disconnect it. This is only the case when 'write
back' cacheing (optimised for speed) is in operation. Stopping the device
forces a cache flush. If the device is set up for 'write-through' cacheing
(optimised for removal), then data writen to the device is not cached and
thus no flush is required before you unplug it.

Memory stick should be configured for the latter option (which appears to be
the case as you have no 'safely remove hardware' icon). It is thus only
necessary to ensure that the activity light on the stick is inactive before
you unplug it.

Please tell me how to configure my memory stick. I just
plugged it in when I bought it and it started working. I
don't remember seeing any options for configuration.

Thanks

The options are not presented at installation time.

Right click on 'My Computer' and select 'Manage'. Select the Drive manager
on the left pane and shortly all connected drives should appear on the
right. Right click on the drive that represents your memory stick, select
'Properties' and then the 'Policies' tab. You should now be looking at the
options. Optimised for removal should be the default option.

Thanks. I found the spot. The 'optimized for removal'
button was already selected, but the icon still pops up
whenever I plug in the memory stick.

I also have an external HD which is not normally plugged in.
When I first bought the HD, the manufacturer's instructions
said to go the shutdown route before unplugging if I was
connected by firewire, but if connected by USB to ignore the
shutdown instructions and just pull the plug. That was on
98SE and after a couple of times pulling the plug, the
instructions (and icon) quit showing up.

I'm on XP(MCE) now. I guess I'll continue shutting down the
memory stick since it's not that big a deal. Two or three
clicks.

Thanks for responding. BTW, that was the first time I
clicked on the Manage option. I hadn't even noticed it was
there. :>)
