Safely Remove Hardware icon not showing in Notification Area

XP Home SP3

The Safely Remove Hardware no longer shows in my Notification Area. It is in
the Past Items section of the Customize Notifications window. I changed
Behavior to Always Show, but did not work.

How do I get it back? There is a Restore Defaults button that I am reluctant
to click, as there are many items in the Past Items section I do not want to
return.

Regards, Anastas.

Yes, me too, a couple of weeks ago. maybe shortly after installing Google
Earth, Logitech Setpoint software for a new USB mouse or an update to FSecure
antivirus.

I'll keep looking for an answer!

I've worked out a reasonably simple solution.

I used my mobile phone as the USB storage device (8Gb internal USB memory).
The important thing about using the phone is that it also tells you what it
is doing.

So, I plug the phone into the USB port and the notification sound shows that
a USB device has been attached. Still no icon. The phone now says it wants
me to select how to talk to the computer, so it must have recognised the
successful connection.

Time to disconnect the phone, so I go to My Computer, right click the Drive
letter for the phone, select 'Eject' and immediately the phone says it can be
safely unplugged from the USB port.

Very easy and it works.

Still no icon, though! But at the end of the day, I think that what we are
really asking for is 'how to safely remove hardware when I don't have the
icon?'

It would be nice to know how to get it back though. I miss the little fella!

Hi Bullrush and Peter,

Thank you for your advice and help. I too miss the helpful little icon
reminding me to be 'safe' before I unplug my USB drive.

Your tips do the trick though.

If anyone finds/knows a way to put the icon back where it belongs please let
me know.

Regards, Anastas

The 'Safely Remove ...' icon should only appear for devices that are
configured for write back cacheing [1]. The XP default for removeable media
devices is write through cacheing [2] for which stopping the device before
removal is unnecessary (hence it is not offered [3]).

[1] aka 'Optimised for speed'
[2] aka 'Optimised for fast removal'
[3] But can be changed and is by some OEMs

corner)
2.) Left mouse click on properties in the drop down list shown
3.) Left mouse click on "Hide inactive icons" until a check mark shows up in
the box
4.) Left mouse click on "customize"
5.) page down through the items displayed until you see "Safely Remove
Hardware"
6.) Right mouse click on the message that indicates "Hide when inactive"
7.) Click the drop down arrow
8.) Select "Always Show"

Ehlo Anastas,
I had a similar problem and it wasn't about the icon being hidden - for some
reason, it just disappeared. It would appear in some cases, but I've researched
the thing and it seems there's no real fix for it. At the time, I used XPSP2
and installed SP3 and this fixed the problem. Guess reinstalling SP3 would
solve this.

I had a similar problem a while ago and the suggestion that worked for me
was to create a new shortcut using this line

%windir%\system32\RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

I place the shortcut on my Quick Launch Toolbar ( you could keep it in your
desktop if you prefer ) and I click it prior to removing a device.

Once I've activated it , THEN it appears in the tray as usual

Hope it works for you too
