I am missing the icon for "Stop Hardware" (USB) in the notification area.
Have clicked on "Always Show" in task bar properties, but no result. How do I
get icons to show?

"Safely Remove Hardware"

To have it show:

With the external drive plugged in, right click the drive in the folders
list, then left click Properties and Hardware. Left Click the name of the
external drive in this list, then click Properties and Policies. This takes
you to the "Write caching and safe removal page". The default position is
"Optimize for quick removal" not "Optimize for performance" as implied by
Freecom and Microsoft. You can put the icon in the notification area by
clicking the underlined "Safely Remove Hardware" on this page.

Ray:
I tried you suggestion, (Left Click the name of the external drive in this
list, then click Properties and Policies. This takes you to the "Write
caching and safe removal page".) and discovered that the "Properties and
Policies" is missing. I only have "Properties" and that section does not have
any mention of policies. (I do rember doing this on a Vista machine.) How do
I get to the "Policies" page? --Thanks--

There's a mixed up:

With the external drive plugged in, right click (not left click) the drive
in the folders list, then left click Properties and then the Hardware tab.
Left Click the name of the external drive in this list, then click Properties
button below and then click Policies tab. This takes you to the "Write
caching and safe removal tab. The default position is "Optimize for quick
removal" not "Optimize for performance" as implied by Freecom and Microsoft.
You can put the icon in the notification area by clicking the underlined
"Safely Remove Hardware" on this page.

Did you try Kelly's tool:

Line 5. Restore Safely Remove Hardware icon

Ray:
I did all that was requested, gave my computer a virus scan (McAfee) and
rebooted. Still no icon. I suspect there are other problems as ZoneAlarm was
also missing, but I was able to restore it's icon.
--Thanks--

To All:
For some reason unknown to me, that after a reboot for McAfee, the missing
icon has reappeard.
My thanks to Ray for trying so hard to find a solution.
