Just downloaded and installed the EMC 7.5 Upgrade. When using the
facility Data - Backup MyPC Deluxe - Disaster Recovery, the wizard ask
me for my Windows Operating System Product Key. I do not have a
Windows Operating System Product Key as my Gateway computer was
purchashed with Windows already installed. How do I go about using
this important Disaster Recovery Backup facility? This is very
important to me.

Yes - I'm having a laugh - at you! Of course you have a product key - it's
on the computer you idiot! Don't you ever RTFM?!

It probably wasn't read by a human, but scanned by a keyword "Bot".
It keyed on some word or phrase and sent you an automated reply.
Just like here, it's best to use the company forums for questions. They
(Roxio) have some employees who frequently answer postings.

By the way your personal Key should be on a sticker on the PC or
the bottom side of a notebook. Software inventory tools like Everest
or Belarc Advisor will report the master imaging Key used at the
factory.

Hey Paddy, even as a OEM preinstalled version of WinXP,
You will have been supplied with a product key - and you will
need it. Click this link to download a tool to retrieve your product

Why would you email Roxio Support for that? It's your responsibility to
provide the key, and one was issued with your computer. It is on a
sticker on the side of the computer case, or if a laptop on the bottom
of the case. Also note that windows was probably installed as an image
of a standard install and as such might _NOT_ be the same key as is on
the sticker. If that's the case and the install for Roxio doesn't work

Why is software asking for the operating systems product key?

Yet another reason to dump Sonic/Roxio besides having to pay for a .5

Welcome to the world of modern tech support. Most places nowadays have
automated reponses (such as the one you received) that just scan for
keywords. I also find places (such as Dell) that have humans reply, provide
answers that are no where near what you were looking for. It typically
takes several replies before you start getting proper answers.

Exactly! That's pretty bizarre. What possible reason would it need the OS
key?
Yet another reason to dump Sonic/Roxio besides having to pay for a .5
update!

Yup! I dumped them a long time ago when they were insisting that you had to
upgrade their product (v3 or 4) when XP first came out, even though they
quietly released a patch that would get it working.

Patrick

The only question in your first message was "How do I go about using this
important Disaster Recovery Backup facility?"

Not surprisingly, they gave you an answer to the ONLY question asked..

Had you asked "How do I get the Windows Product key?" or "why do I need the
Windows Product key?", they probably would have given an answer to either or
both too..

Now, if somebody in the thread would like to tell me where the joke element
is hiding in all of this, I will join in the laughter.. :-)

Why is software asking for the operating systems product key?

Yet another reason to dump Sonic/Roxio besides having to pay for a .5
update!

I'd be telling them I'm returning their product as no way it should
REQUIRE knowing your product key to install and/or use. Don't put up with
that crap and PLEASE don't support or encourage companies to even try it.

Microsoft Required ROXIO/SONIC to do this when backing up a Win XP
machine .. it has to do with microsofts activation technology

Use the same version of BACkUP MY PC to backup WIN/ME/98 and it will
never ask you for the number ..

As far as it being a gateway computer and not having a KEY is wrong..

GATEWAY is REQUIRED to put a STICKER on your Computer with that KEY !!

if your sticker is gone, U can download a utilty that will give you that
KEY !!

Are you people even reading this stuff??? You folks taht always
think the answer is dump this or taht I have found the next best
thing... He was settignm up the disaster & recovery stuff. It was
asking for the OS key so that it could make a recovery disk that
would automate teh process.

Are you reading yourself! Obviously not!

I would only use a disaster and recovery program that didn't ask what is
none of its business. Fools like you are willing to jump through any
hoop that a software company wants you to jump through to use their
programs!

I do have to disagree with Mike though. the question he asked was not
answered. He asked how to use Roxio's recovery program w/o a Key,
which granted he had. The question they answered was how to use the
MSConfig program which had nothing to do with what was asked. It was
a very uninformed question but then again that is what tech support
is for. E-mail & web based support is the worst for this. I have
also had a major problem with ATI about this. They have an
autoresponder program & the first response has yet to help me.
