Router Troubles

I have a Linksys Router (wired/no wireless). I randomly get the No
Connectivity icon in the icon tray. Some days the gateway will work with no
problems other days it will be very problematic. I have contacted Linksys
and they said it is a XP SP2 issue. I believe this because ever since I
installed SP2 this problem keeps arising. To confirm this problem, I
disconnecting 2 XP SP2 systems off the router and left the 2 98 systems on
the router. No problems occurred over a 1 week period, then I disconnected
the 98 machines and reconnected the XP SP 2 machines to the gateway.
Problems started to occur within a few hours. To resolve the problem, I have
to disconnect the power supply from the router then reconnect. I have
internet access for a few minutes or hours then the problem arises again.

All system have their own LAN IP address. I have all network protocols
configured correctly. The router/gateway interface is configured correctly.
All systems do not enter into standby as they are left on all the time.

William,

With the Windows 98 and Windows XP computers all connected, does the
connectivity problem hit all 4 computers at the same time? Does it hit both XP
computers at the same time? Do you lose file sharing (are you doing file
sharing) also?

Exactly what condition do you observe when you lose internet access?

Have you loaded the latest drivers for the network cards (are both the cards and
router Linksys products?)?

From each computer:
From a command window:
1) Ping www.yahoo.com.
2) Ping 66.94.230.33.
Report success / exact text of error messages.
From your browser:
3) Browse www.yahoo.com.
4) Browse 66.94.230.33.
Report success / exact text of error messages.

The "Limited or No Connectivity" error is well known, sometimes it occurs with
actual loss of network connection, other times network connection continues even
with the message:

Page will not display in IE. No email access. Cannot gain access to Router
interface but have access to file sharing on all systems.

All drivers and firmware are up to date.
From each computer:
From a command window:
1) Ping www.yahoo.com.

ping request could not find host www.yahoo.com. Please check the name and
try agin.

This is reported on all computers
2) Ping 66.94.230.33.

Pinging 66.94.230.33 with 33 bytes of data:

William,

OK, that's intriguing. It does indeed sound like the XP computer problem is
causing the router to disable itself, and on the WAN side yet.

Verify please "When pinging to LAN computers, pings are successful" - is this
when the WAN side of the router is not working?

There are known problems with XP SP2, like you said, but most of them (as in the
PCHell article) affect only the individual computer. Never heard of one
computer affecting the router. Gonna take some out of the box thinking there.

Can you try and narrow it down a bit? Run with both Windows 98 computers, and
just one (and then the other) XP computer? See if the problem is related to one
XP computer, that might give a clue.

I tried this and the router still goes offline. Linksys told me that the
Windows Firewall might be causing conflicts with the NAT. But all XP
computers have the Windows Firewall turned off. But I decided to shut down
the Windows Firewall Service in the Services under Administrative Tools
because I use a third-party firewall and do not use ICS and the routers
seems to be fine. I know it is not the router because I have another Linksys
and it does the same thing. One of my friends are experiencing the same
issue as I am, so I told him to do what I did and he seems to be not having
troubles now.
