I am due to replace my laptop and would like to know if
there is a simple process for moving all my profile
information to a network drive to subsequently import onto
the new laptop (I have W2K v5 SP4)?

Greetings --

Simply copy the "C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents,"
the "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Favorites," the "C:\Documents
and Settings\username\Desktop," and any other data folders to a secure
location, and then copy their contents to the equivalent locations on
the new laptop, once you've logged in to create a user profile for
yourself. Of course, desktop shortcuts may not work if the
applications they invoke are not installed, or are in different
locations, on the new computer. There's little point in copying the
entire user profile, as there will be a great deal of unnecessary and
undesirable "trash" in the various temporary Internet folders,
although some cookies may be desirable to preserve settings at some
web sites.

Transferring locally stored/archived email messages, if any, will
depend upon your specific email client application. Your network
administrator and/or help desk personnel should be able to provide you
with the necessary specific instructions.
