remote desktop help

I go to boarding school. I can access my dorm computer from any other
computer on campus using my IP address. However, when I go home for break,
and I try to access the same computer using the same IP address it doesnt
work. It gives me the "Remote Desktop Disconnected" error message. What do
I need to do?

Does the school allow the port to be opened through their campus firewall?
Do you have to make a special request to do this?
In the dorm, do you have an external address or a private internal address?
Can you be more specific about the error you do get?
Do you have your Windows Firewall configured to allow Remote Desktop from
computers outside the subnet your system is on?
