remote assistance stopped working

I used to be able to access my clients two laptops using remote assistance
but now it no longer is able to connect, giving timeout message.

Configuration:
Both remote laptops are using XP Pro with latest service packs. The remote
laptops are on a (dual nic) SBS network behind a Netopia router. I can
access the SBS server using remote workplace. We can also connect to the SBS
server with VPN. Nothing has changed configuration wise.

My desktop can access another client's laptop using remote assitance.

Any suggestions on how to get remote workplace up and running again would be
appreciated... I really don't want to have to drive over to their site every
time they have a problem!

Have you joined those two laptops to the domain? If yes, how did you do that?

I don't think these computers are added to the domain, they were recently
replaced.

What are the consequences of adding a pc to the domain? I don't want the
server restricting these PC's in anyway (such as policies etc). The laptops
operate autonomously and only connect the server for file sharing and a COM+
application. All AV, Firewall etc is managed from the laptops.

Thanks

sorry for the double post, this forums web interface leaves something to be
desired ;)

I wanted to mention I drove to my client site and was able to do remote
assistance between the two laptops e.g. behind the NAT router. Nothing has
changed router wise and as I mentioned, this was working before.

I use Windows Messenger to invoke the Remote Assistance.

Thanks.

I did want to mention I was able to do RA between the two laptops behind the
NAT router. Note the router config has not been changed and this was working
before.

If you want to use RWW, you must join the laptops to the domain. If you want to use remote assistance, make sure the port 3389 is open. By the way, what's the error message?

Hi Robert

No' I'm not trying to enable RWW. I'm only trying to support my clients
using Remote Assistance. On Windows Firewall RA is listed as an exception and
the Netopia router has port 3389 passthrough.

Thanks.
