Help Desk Remote Desktop Assistance

Rick

We run a small help desk function for about 2000 users. We have some
individuals who travel and while traveling, they VPN back into the network to
access resources and check e-mail. We lend these users laptops in order to
do this and they only have user rights to prevent them from loading illegal
software, shareware, free ware, games....we have our reasons :) Anyway, a
user was having issues with his laptop and asked if we could assist. We had
him establish a VPN connection and once connected, we tried to use remote
desktop connection to access the system and perform the requested
maintenance. We couldn't do this because the network didn't see the system
online. However, I could connect to the system through explorer to access
the hard drive. Issue, I'm using the same rights as the user meaning the
elevated privileges I would have had if I could have connected using remote
desktop are gone. Is it possible to establish a remote desktop connection to
a system that is connected using a VPN connection? Whew, I knew there was a
question in there somewhere :)

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide

Can you ping the client by IP when they are connected via the VPN? If you
can you should be able to use Remote Desktop.

Al Jarvi,

I can ping it and I can connect to it by going through explorer using
\\computername\c$ but for some reason it won't let me connect to it remotely.
I'll have to check the desktop firewall when it returns to see if RD is
enabled. I just needed to know if it was possible. Thanks for the help!
