Can someone help?
Where does a software install program(upgrade or patch to a program) look to
find out what release is currently installed?
Any help would be appreciated.

There's not a single answer to your question. Each install
program has its own way of version checking. Some look
in the registry, others don't. Some simply check for the
existence of a specific file, while others will look a inside
specific file (or files) for a version number string.

Which program(s) are you interested in upgrading?

Let me re-phrase that it is a proprietary application.
I believe it is looking in the Registry, but not sure.

The app shows that is is software load 2.1.11

When I try to load a patch for this software (2.1.11 U2.2) it starts the
process and then tells me that I must have 2.1.11 release installed prior to
installing this update.

If I look at the version of the *.exe app it shows it as being 2.1.11 also,
I can't seem to find a file anywhere in the paticular directory that also
reflects that vesion. So I just am assuming that it is somewhere in the
registry

No one here could know for sure how your patch is doing
its version checking. The software developer would know.
