I'm interested in recovering corrupt MS Word files.

Roughdraft is an odd one. The extra panes are an excellant feature, and
all WP packages should adopt that feature right way imho. OTOH, at
least last time I used it, the only formats it handled were rtf and
txt. Has it been developed some more since then? (that was a few years
ago)

A couple of notes re corrupt .docs:

Of all the file formats I've used, .doc has had the highest rate of
corruption.

..doc is very bloated for small and medium files. Only with large files,
eg whole books, does it become competitive size-wise.

As someone else said, using .doc is a security issue, since the doc
format stores lots of text changes wthin it.

Canopener is the last resort file opener for all formats, doc included.
It extracts all usable text from any file type, with filters to
distinguish human language from junk. Hard to find, but it is out
there. (vague memory: possibly produced by abbott)

And last of all, roadkil's unstoppable copier will extract files from
damaged media, so can be a useful part of the corrupt .doc reading
process.

Thanks for the Canopener lead, I'll look for it...I found it:
http://www.abbottsys.com/. It's not freeware. There is a free 1997
version but you have to use Total Commander (Commercial) or BBEdit (Mac
- commercial). ANybody have a different take on this? I actually
bought the product and its pretty good, but it could use a shell
extension for the Context Menu but I don't think its there, anyways,
the commercial product discussion is out of context here, but thanks
for the lead all the same.
