Text Editor and Word Processor Review

R

REM

I installed and tried many editors and processors quite awhile back
and then got side tracked and the project went stale. Susan has helped
immensely in preparing and in maintaining the html and php!! Thanks
another million Susan!

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/TextEditorReview.php

'jmatt' posted this extensive list below not long ago and I thought
that I'd better get back on task and update the site above, both in
new programs and in newer versions of the ones that I have already
done. I've been "perpetually" working on an office (like 2 years now)
and I'm just about through I think, but it will still be awhile before
I get back to the project. Some feedback will greatly help in
direction in the meantime!

One question, what sort of a machine should I try to put together for
the test machine?

The original test machine was an HP Pavilion, 500 mhz Intel, 256 megs
of ram, a Maxtor 7200 drive running a very solid and stable Win 98SE
OS. My daughter is leaving with it for college in a couple of weeks.

I'm trying to select a "nominal" test machine; neither cutting edge
nor a dog.

My current machine is a 2.4 GHz with a gig of ram running XP Pro, and
I think this is a bit too high end to be considered nominal (it rocks
my socks off though!)

What would be considered nominal today as to processor speed and ram?

I was really just bumbling along in selection of what to compare
between programs. I included what I think important, such as reg
entries and size, and then pretty much looked for broad categories
that some programs had, but others did not. This is what I ended up
with:

1. Registry entries
2. Download size in KB
3. Executable size in KB (not including subprograms or .dll's.)
4. Maximum file size in MB the program can work with on MY system.
YMMV
5. AS (AutoSave open files)
6. S (splits files) J (joins files)
7. MF (opens multiple files) SV (split view) Ex (external viewer)
8. Sp (spell checker) Th (thesaurus) Stat (statistics - words,
characters, etc.)
9. RTF (reads and writes Rich Text Format)
10. Export formats
11. HL (syntax highlighting: hyperlinks, programming languages)
12. Enc (encryption) Er (erase files)
13. eMail (can email a file)
14. S&R (Search and Replace) Strip (strips HTML coding) Macro (built
in macro capability)
15. SW (soft wrap at a user defined column) HW (hard wrap - saves wrap
info with file

I can see that install, or no install, might be good to add. Are there
any other things that you might consider important in an editor or
word processor?

I lost my high speed connection and have plenty to do with standard
editors and light weight word processors. Would someone with a high
speed connection consider doing the large office suites as a sub
project? Not to assist MS with sales, but comparing these with MS
Office upon whatever criterion you think important for a large office
package would be very valuable info imo.

OK, ya got me. I downloaded, installed with Total Uninstall running,
executed the program and got an error.

Two of my files were old. I had to track down, download, insert and
register two newer files to the \system32 directory:

TABCTL32.OCX (an activeX control??)
http://www.softinterface.com/FAQ/FAQ-Installation.htm

COMDLG32.OCX
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/comdlg32.htm

Both of my files (fully patched XP Pro) were dated 1997. The
replacement files were dated 2000.

IT WORKS!!!! And pretty well so far. A couple of runtime errors in
search and replace...

I really think this is a text editor that can read .RTF, but no rtf
formatting is applied.

How much of this program did you write?

REM was searching for good editors:
loads very slow

you have forgotten the ultimate editor.

My current machine is a 2.4 GHz with a gig of ram running XP Pro, and
I think this is a bit too high end to be considered nominal (it rocks
my socks off though!)
What would be considered nominal today as to processor speed and ram?
1GHz CPU, 512MB RAM, Linux including all you need (SCNR)

1. Registry entries no

2. Download size in KB 18MB

3. Executable size in KB (not including subprograms or .dll's.) 4.5MB

4. Maximum file size in MB the program can work with on MY system.
YMMV
? some hundred MB
5. AS (AutoSave open files) yes

6. S (splits files) J (joins files) no

7. MF (opens multiple files) SV (split view) Ex (external viewer) MFSV

8. Sp (spell checker) Th (thesaurus) Stat (statistics - words,
characters, etc.) SP

9. RTF (reads and writes Rich Text Format) no

10. Export formats Postscript

11. HL (syntax highlighting: hyperlinks, programming languages) yes

12. Enc (encryption) Er (erase files) EncDelZIP

13. eMail (can email a file)
yes Mail, News, IRC
14. S&R (Search and Replace) Strip (strips HTML coding) Macro (built
in macro capability)
S&R even with regular expressions, Editor MACroS, you are kidding -> ELISP!
15. SW (soft wrap at a user defined column) HW (hard wrap - saves wrap
info with file
all you can eat
I can see that install, or no install, might be good to add. Are there
any other things that you might consider important in an editor or
word processor?
no install, unlimited undo, international code/unicode, perfect
programming editor (syntax highlightning, indent, style, class browser,
etags, bookmarks, online help, diff, merge, very special commands like
eval, interface for version controll systems, debugger ...) fully
documentated in many languages, works on nearly all platforms, free
software (not only priceless), easy to configure (documented),

lots of extra features (not needed but helpful): calendar, diary,
time-log, calculator, eshell, directory browser (open, rename, delete
....), sort, hexeditor, rot13, morsing, vertical editing, picture
editing, text-folding, games, browser(text), mail, usenet, irc ...

I installed and tried many editors and processors quite awhile back...

Really helpful, many thanks! I'm looking forward to the updates.

A correction, if I may - Notetab Light doesn't do syntax or URL
highlighting (the for-pay Pro version does, if you need it).

Also, while Notetab Light can send email, it doesn't do it natively. An
email "clip library" must be downloaded from the site and run from
within NTL.

And an extra Easter Egg in Metapad for you - Click Help --> About, then
double-click the notepad icon, see what happens...

I must have goofed. Thanks for the correction! I'll try to get a
better system of taking notes going this time around.
Also, while Notetab Light can send email, it doesn't do it natively. An
email "clip library" must be downloaded from the site and run from
within NTL.

I was debating whether this feature is worth mentioning or not. A
simple copy and paste from any editor into an email is very simple. As
you point out, programs go about the implementation of an email
facility in a variety of ways, most of which are less preferrable to
copy\paste.
And an extra Easter Egg in Metapad for you - Click Help --> About, then
double-click the notepad icon, see what happens...

Thanks for the feedback!

I have a "little" list of editors (and few office suites). . . ;) which I'll post below in
alphabetical order. These apps are shown on several different ACF program info pages. They're
grouped together on this temporary web page:

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/TextEditorReview2.php

I'd like to revise the text editor/ HTML editor etc. etc. subcategories on the ACF program info
pages and then get these apps into the right subcategories.

Steven Burn posted this URL today:

http://www.vbbox.com/tools/editors/listing.asp

I think "Code editor" would be a useful way of grouping some of the apps. Thoughts on this?
Suggestions for subcategory revisions? All help appreciated.

Extraneous note: I reported the file opening problem. It was assigned
to Mark Gilbert. I wrote back asking him for more details to his two
liner below.

==============================================================================

Hello,

I'm comparing and contrasting various text editors and word
processors. Below is a link to the first comparison, using AbiWord
v1.0.6. This version opened a 2 megabyte file on my old machine.

My current machine is a rock solid XP Pro on a 2.4 GHz processor with
1 gig of quality ram and a 7200 rpm Maxtor drive (much improved from
the original test machine).

AbiWord v2.2.9 choked in opening a 1 megabyte text file! I saved the
file as a Word 2002 .doc file and AbiWord did finally manage to open
it. This took several minutes!

I just wanted to bring this to your attention and invite your
consideration on solving this problem. I would expect the program to
open, work on, and save at least a 50 meg file. The limitation is
within the code; not in the hardware or OS.

The original comparison page is listed below. It contains the utility
I wrote to create the test text files. Feel free to try your luck with
this and on large files of your own creation.

I'm in the process of recreating these comparisons on a new machine
with updated versions of each program.

We're quite aware that AbiWord's performance sucks, and it's worth
noting that it is a rather flawed and in a number of respects
incorrect test you point to.

There are a great number of open bug reports. I'd have to give AbiWord
two thumbs down, for the Windows version anyway. There are several
versions for linux.

The program is currently choking on a 1 meg text file :( again.

Just wanted to say I'm real sorry for not seeing this post when I asked
a few posts later for a text editor with tabs. It really annoys me when
others do that so I always make sure I don't. I'm wondering if my ISP
didn't have this available.

I like Jarte which is mentioned in another reply here but can't see a
way to wrap text round a graphic.

Apologies
