I have a VPR Matrix laptop with Windows XP home, which i loaded service pack
2 on plus my anti-virus program. . now windows will not load. . receive the
msg "NTLDR is compressed. . press ctl+alt+del to restart". :. . i do this
and the message just keeps repeating itself. . .have done searches on NTLDR
and seems like the solution is to install the "recovery console". . .didn't
know what that was so did another search. . was told how to install it but
cannot because windows will not boot. . .i ran the restore CD with no luck.
.. had three options.. .
#1) do a non-destructable restore (saves everything) tried that. . got the
message concerning the NTLDR. . tried the second option. . .restores windows
but deletes all windows programs loaded since purchase. . .got the same
message. . . have not tried third option which is a reformat. . .any
suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help. . .Gene Foltz

You don't have to "install" the Recovery Console. Just use your Windows
XP cd and boot "to" the Recovery Console, somewhat like what you used to
do when you were booting to DOS with a Windows 9x boot disk.

Boot with the cd and at the "Welcome to Setup" screen press F10 or press
"R" to repair and the Recovery Console will launch.

See here:

Description of the Windows XP Recovery Console
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058

Tip: When offered a Windows installation to logon to enter a number, if
you just highlight the selection and press enter the computer will
reboot. You need the Administrator password to access the installation.

For the "NTLDR is compressed..." message see if this can help:

Once you get to the Recovery console, type fixmbr. That should fix your
problem.

Hmmm. Usually when you get an NTLDR message it means that the MBR works
fine and that it found a boot sector to pass on the booting process to.

You're going to need a real XP cd, not a restore cd. Either borrow a
friend's or take the machine to a local professional (not your version
of BigStoreUSA).

Well, you probably don't have a diskette drive, so make yourself a boot
cd instead. http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ . I never used it but it
looks like a not too elaborate a cd to make. If you can boot with that
it will be easy to fix your Windows. Or get a real XP CD.

This Restore Disk, no Windows CD, you're screwed business just plain
s....! With it's piracy protection mechanisms there is absolutely NO
reason why Microsoft should allow (or BE allowed) to carry out this
perverse practice! Microsoft (or someone else) should put an end to
this nonsense!

John

If you can boot with that you can

See the web site for support, for example from here
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/faq.html I got this:

Question: Do you have a step-by-step guide on how I can create the
Ultimate Boot CD?

[Contributed by Adrian Stanciu] Here are the steps to create a CD:

1. Open your web browser.
2. Go to the Ultimate Boot CD homepage: http://ubcd.sourceforge.net/.
3. From the "Table of Content" to the right, choose "Download the UBCD".
4. If you're using Windows, download "Self-extracting EXE". And
after it's finished, run it.
5. If you're not using Windows, download "Plain old ZIP" and extract
the .zip archive.
6. You'll now have a .ISO file. Burn the .ISO file as a CD image. If
you don't know how, see the question "How do I create the Ultimate Boot
CD from the ISO image file?" on this page:
http://ubcd.sourceforge.net/faq.html
7. If this still didn't work for you, maybe you should try and buy a
physical CD already made for you. Select "Getting a Physical Copy" from
the "Table of Content" on the website.

There is a support forum there where you can ask and get help. I'm sure
you will find Boot CD experts to help you there.

PS. Is this a .zip file? Maybe the computer that you are using doesn't
have built in support fo zips or maybe it's disabled. You can use this
