Receiving faxes - Reception Error

T

TC

I have a W2kPro machine setup to receive faxes only and
then to email them to the secretary, and print them out.

Problem is that some people can fax to us and some can't!
The ones that can't, I notice the modem picks up and
starts negotiation, and then quits. Does anyone else have
this problem or do I just need a new modem?

This is more of a generic problem that can happen due to various reasons -
problem with the modem, problem with the telephone line, problem with the
source device, problem with some other software blocking/using the device on
the machine etc. Given your problem is random, it's still tougher to find
the cause. You will have to enable additional logging to give us any useful
information. This requires some registry changes. If you are interested Russ
Valentine (our MVP) can send you the instructions and you can send him the
log files.

But in my opinion if you have any doubts about the modem, it's better to
replace it with a new modem and check the behavior.

Some other simple ways to trouble-shoot the problem are
1. Look in the event viewer for any log messages by the fax service
2. Do you see any pattern in the failures - like only particular modems are
not able to send faxes to your modem, or failure happens only when you are
doing something on the local machine etc. Just think about the ways to
minimize the scope of the problem and to fetch any additional clues
