Unable to receive faxsx. Windows 2000 fax- reception error after fax answering call

Windows 2000, has always worked ok until about recent windows update.
Incoming calls are received but end up in "reception error". Reception
error occurs after the actual incoming transmit is attempted. Outgoing
faxes work ok. All settings look ok.

The fax modem is "US Robotics 56k currier everything",
