The first thing I would do is open word and go to File-->
Properties and look at the General tab. You cannot affect the checkboxes
here, but you can see if the document is read only from the get-go. If it
is, you probably need to erase the Normal.dot and let Word create a new one
for you.
Also, go to tools--> Options-->save tab, and see if the "Recommend Read
Only" checkbox is not checked
