Right click on a blank part of the taskbar (i.e., a spot on the taskbar not
covered by a toolbar or a window button) and remove the checkmark from 'Lock
the Taskbar'. You'll now see the 'handles' on either side of the Quick
Launch toolbar. Drag the right handle (slowly) until the Quick Launch
toolbar is as long as it needs to be. Restore the checkmark to 'Lock the
Taskbar' if you wish.
Here's a bonus tip: If you choose to enable the Desktop toolbar, slide it
all the way to the right until all you see is the word Desktop and the
double arrows. When you click on those double arrows you'll be shown a list
of all the icons on your desktop. It's like having a mini-desktop right
there.
