Question about Remote Assistance?

M. Saddy

Hi,

I am having a problem with the Remote Assistance service on XP Pro PC. I am
able to send the invitation but when my husband receives the invitation and
tries to connect to my PC he gets the following message; "A Remote
Assistance connection could not be established. You may want to check for
network issues or determine if the invitation expired or was cancelled by
the person who sent it." The invitation is still valid but he gets the error
every time!

Please note that if he sends the invitation I can connect and control his PC
with no problem! So, we at lease know that we don't have a problem with the
internet connections or settings! Unfortunately, my husband is overseas and
I need him to connect to my PC and be able to control it to help me with
some issues.

Please help and thank you in advance!

Troubleshooting Remote Assistance Issues
http://www.chicagotech.net/rdesktop.htm

"When you receive an invitation from an Internet user whose
computer is behind a router or firewall, the IP sent to you is
the Private IP behind the router or firewall, so that you can't
access the computer. To fix this issue: 1) use Notepad to open
the invitation to change the Private IP to the Public IP which
may be the router or firewall's IP. 2) Use Windows Messenger
to establish the Remote Assistance session".

Hi,

Are you behind a router that lets you share a single IP address to many
machines? If the answer is yes, the invitation is going to contain the IP
address of you private network and not the public IP address of the router.
I've found that if one opens the invite in Notepad and changes the IP
address to the public IP address and then saves it, it can be used to
establish the connection as long as the router passes port 3389 back to your
machine.

If the above doesn't apply, do you have a personal firewall installed and/or
is it configured to accept TCP traffic on port 3389.

To work around this problem, use either of the following methods.

• Create a new Remote Assistance invitation while ICF is enabled, and then
send the new invitation to the expert.

• Disable the Internet Connection Firewall while the expert attempts to
establish the Remote Assistance invitation.

• Restart the novice's computer, and then have the expert establish the
Remote Assistance session.

Thanks, I do have a router and I changed the IP to the public IP but still
same results! Do I have to use Messenger to establish the session? I don't
have it on my PC!!

Thanks again!

Thanks to you too! Yes, I do have a router! I changed the IP address but it
did not work.. same error! I am not sure about the router passing port 3389
to the PC I am using for the invitation! How can I make sure that it does? I
have three PC's in my house and I am using a D-link DI-624 router to network
them. Again, Thank you very much and I hope I am not intruding!
