XP Remote assistance only works one way

I am trying to help a friend and want to connect to his comp using remote
desktop. He sends me the request via LiveMessenger but I get the error
"Remote Assistance connection could not be established because the remote
host name could not be resolved. Please try again"

If I send him an invite he connects to me immediately, what setting would
allow him to connect to me but not allow me to connect to him? We tried the
email method but got the same error. I had him turn off his XP firewall. He
is using the router that came with FIOS.

What do you think is only allowing a connection in one direction?

Router needs to have port-forwarding configured so that Remote request will
sent to his PC.

You need to find out the Internet IP address since you probably will not be
able to locate the PC's IP address, which is in back of the the router (ex.:
192.168.21.111.
Have him got to "www.whatismyip.com"

The router is causing this problem.
