programs running background, can't play game

I have Gateway Computer Microsoft XP 2000 and I am trying to load Diablo II (pc game) on my computer but it
gives me an exception error stating that some of the programs running in the background
will not let the game play. I had it loaded on another Gateway but it was a 98 and it played fine.
Please help
