Problems with JVC GR-D270US - Does not talk to WMM using IEEE-1394

Hello -
If someone can help, I would sure appreciate the assistance. I just
purchased the JVC GR-D270US digital camcorder, and I cannot get it to
communicate with my computer using IEEE-1394 firewire. I took the camcorder
back to the store for a replacement, and the new one will still not
communicate with my computer. Windows Movie Maker does not see my camcorder,
and gives me an error all the time, saying no device is connected. I also
tried using the USB connector by itself, and once I put in a Memory Card,
(required but not documented), my system recognized the Cam Corder. I was
not able to transfer any video using the USB port, so I have disconnected the
cable in favor of the IEEE-1394 firewire.

I am running Windows XP Pro, SP2, on an AMD 64 3500+ processor, with 2GB of
memory, and 300GB of free disk space. the IEEE-1394 ports are built into the
motherboard (ASUS 8NSLI-Deluxe).

I contacted JVC, and they tell me that their camera will only work with
Pinnacle Studio 9 software. (JVC also never told me I had to have a memory
card in order to use the USB port!!!) They also said it has not been tested
with Window's Movie Maker.

Has anyone else had the same problem? Can someone tell me how to get my
Camcorder to talk to my PC with the IEEE-1394 firewire? Do I have to buy a
separate piece of software? This is really very frustrating and I'm ready to
just call it quits with the whole process !!! I sure hope someone can help
me.

Thank you all for your time.

Has the firewire port ever worked with another firewire device attached to
it?

Hi Cari -

Yes it has in the past. Unfortunately, I do not have those devices, as I
was testing them out for some other people. But they did work on the port.

I've transferred data from this camera with the firewire connection
successfully using several different software apps, not sure if I tried
WMM, though. If you like, I'll try it when I get home tonight, and let
you know through the newsgroup or email. As you discovered, the USB port
only transfers stills from the media card. You'll need the firewire for
video. Makes me suspect the firewire port, however, since the camera
works with USB. Have you checked the firewire status in Device Manager?
