Using Movie Maker via USB with a miniDV camcorder

I have a JVC GR-D54E miniDV camcorder and I am using a software named Pixela
to export my movies to my computer but the quality it provides is not very
good.So I decided to use movie maker but while trying to have the settings
done the program freezes until I turn off the camcorder.I could not export
anything with movie maker. My question is;Do I need to have an IEEE 1394 type
of connection in between the camcoder and the computer to use movie maker? And
of course for that reason I think I should have an IEEE-1394 card on my
computer.Thank you for your commends or recommendations.

I am a novice at video. I tried a USB2 connection for my Panasonic miniDV
camera and it did not work in MM2 (or anything else) in WinXP SP2. Others
have had a problem with USB and SP2, also. I am not willing to roll back to
SP1, as SP2 is a big improvment. I got a firewire cable and now everything
works great. Made all the difference. The camera was recognized in MM2 right
away, and MM2 controls the camera (stop, start, pause, etc.) from within the
program. FWIW, I found a cable at Staples for about 30.00 bucks that has
changable ends (4 and 6 pin firewire), so you can use the same cable for any
setup (computer/computer; camera/camera/ laptop/camera, etc.). A nice idea,
I think.
