problems with audio

I have some programs recorded on dvd. if I put them on my hard disk, they are
in a VOD-format. I changed the extension to avi in order to make clean files
(deleting pub etc) with movie maker
I always loose the sound: whe i import the video in to movie maker: the
sound is gone

how comes ?
does anyone know?

Because in essence the files are still mpegs and changing the file extension
does not alter this, just fools MM into thinking it can import the file. You
need to either use a mpeg editor, Ulead videostudio, womble etc or use an
app to convert the file into a dv-avi or wmv for MM to edit.
