Movie Maker Avi Problems.

Help! Movie maker has stopped recognizing AVI files. In the past, I'd
shoot AVI movies, save them to my computer and upload them for editing
in Movie Maker.

Recently, Movie maker doesn't seem to recognize the AVI files. Movie
maker will import the files, but when the AVI file is played or
dropped into a timeline the preview screen is black with only the
sound comes through, no video.

Other movies such as MGP videos work fine.

What to do? How can I get movie maker to properly load the AVI files,
or how do I convert AVI to a format that does work?

Thanks,

Shooter

Graham:

I was afraid it was something I did. I recently tried to install a
new game on my PC and got an error message everytime I tried to
download it from the cd. After a call to the manufacturer's service
department, I was instructed to update my video drivers(?). Which I
attempted to do from Microsoft's website, but now appears to render my
AVI movie files unreadable by MM. The game still doesn't work btw.

Thoughts on what to do now? Do I need to reload MM?

I'd do this.
Use system restore back to before you tried to install the game.
Use this page for how to update your graphics drivers

What sort of avi file is it?

Thanks for getting back to me. Not sure what type of AVI files it
is. Is there something in properties that would tell me?

Also, how do I do a system restore?

GSpot can help you identify the .avi file:

Hey. I have the same problem! I've been trying to find a solution all week, and it's driving me crazy.

I have this avi file (I have no idea what type, in it's Properties, it just says ''Type: Video Clip (.avi)'', if you show me how to determine what type I'll try!)

Originally it would only play the sound in Windows Media Player and Movie Maker, basically being recognized as an audio file, even though its properties say 'video clip', with a black screen in MM and the audio animations in WMP.

But after downloading a couple of different codec packages it now plays fine in Windows Media Player, but the situation hasn't changed at all in Movie Maker - and that's what I originally wanted to use in the first place, to edit it!

Somebody PLEASE help me! I'd appreciate it so much!!!
