Problems reinstalling Windows XP

Michelle

I am trying to reinstall XP on my PC (Presario 8000) and
after contacting technical support they are telling me
that I need new quickrestore CDs. The technician had me
fdisk and delete all partitions. The quickrestore CDs
don't do anything. I've created boot disks and also tried
running the quickrestore CDs, but nothing's happening.
Before I ran the fdisk, I was getting "run time error
R6003 - integer divide by zero". Can anyone help? I just
can't get the quickrestore CDs to work and I'm getting
extremely frustrated.

Did you make any hardware changes to your computer? In order for
the Restore CDs to work, you must return your computer to the same
hardware configuration as it was when you purchased it. Even changing
a video card or sound card will prevent the Restore CDs from installing
since it looks for a particular hardware configuration prior to installing.

If the Compaq technician is unable to help your with your Compaq
Restore CDs, then the alternative is to go out and purchase a conventional
"Full Version" of Windows XP and install it as follows:

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

1. Open your BIOS and set your "CD Drive as the first bootable device".

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. ** Immediately after installing Windows XP, turn on XP's Firewall **

7. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

8. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

No, I haven't made any hardware changes. Obviously, I
have peripherals installed. Should I unhook all
peripherals? Would that make a difference? There's quite
a bit of other software on the quickrestore CD that I
would like to reinstall also, so besides purchasing XP,
can you think of any other reason why Compaq thinks I need
new quickrestore CD's. I guess I just don't think that
will make a difference.

Well get new ones then! I don't see the problem!

.
Basically, I was just trying to confirm that the
technician knew what he was talking about. I don't see
how new CDs will fix the problem because the ones I have
are readable. I have searched the internet for two days
and can't figure out why quickrestore CDs won't run and
have come up empty handed. I thought that maybe someone
in this newsgroup had seen this problem before and might
have an alternate solution. The technician had me fdisk
my hard-drive and I do not think that was necessary
either, because apparently when you use a Win98 boot disk
it doesn't see all your directories and so I thought my
c:\windows directory was gone and in reality it was not.
So the technician had me fdisk for no reason.
