Problem with XP standby and hibernate

Hi,
My XP Home (on my Compaq Presario 2500 notebook) is having problems with
standby and hibernate mode.

When I select standby, the monitor shuts off but the disk keeps running and
never shuts off. I can not get my monitor back on and in the end I have to
power it down to restart my laptop.

Also, when I select hibernate, my laptop just hangs.

Please help me with this. I have tried uninstalling and restalling the ACPI
fixedfeature button with no avail.
