for a while now in internet explorer when i click the favorites icon the
column that is supposed to display my favorites just appears as a solid grey
column with a x in the top right right corner.
i have tryed installing IE7 and the favorites work fine but i prefer to run
IE6.
I have checked the path is correct in registry editor.
I can not work it out.
Any Help Would Be Much Appreciated

0x80004005 implies "Access Denied". Try running the command under built-in
Administrator account. If that does not help, you need to verify the
registry permissions.

I have seen cases of that symptom associated with missing modules.

You could use DependencyWalker to profile that regsvr32.exe command
to get a trace of the calls involved for doing the shdocvw.dll DllInstall routine.
The error message would interrupt the trace and at that point you would
see in the trace what it had been doing or (more likely) trying to do.

As Ramesh notes the symptom may also be due to registry permissions.
In that case you could use another tool, RegMon (from SysInternals)
to highlight that case and show you specifically which key was causing
the problem.

Via Safe Mode (for XP Home). For XP Professional, press CTRL+ALT+DEL at the
Welcome screen, and type the credentials in the classic logon box. Also have
a look at Robert's post (about Dependency Walker)
