How to backup IE7 Favorites sort order?

Ale

Hi, when I had IE6 the method outlined below worked perfectly to backup the
Favorites sort order (to make it clear, I'm not referring to backing up the
Favorites which can be done from within IE using File/Import-Export, I'm
referring to being able to back them up so I can later restore them in the
EXACT same custom sort order as originally, so I don't have to manually drag
hundreds of bookmarks to the order in which they were originally).

Sort order is not preserved when you transfer favorites to another PC
If you use the Import/Export Wizard or manually copy the URL favorites to
another system, the sort order will not be copied to the target system. This
is because Windows stores the sort order in the registry. Neither the
Import/Export Wizard or manual copy operation will reference the sort order
registry key.
In order to have the sort order applied to the other PC, export the
following registry from the source PC:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Favorites
Save the above key as a REG file and apply this in the other computer. The
sort order is now copied/overwritten.

The issue is that in IE7 I checked that resgistry key but it seems to not
have the favorites in the original sort order but ordered alphabetically. So
how can I do it in IE7? Thanks

Hi,
Exporting / importing that key should still work. Don't worry about the
order of the sub-keys under Favorites. The sort order is in the DWORD
"Order" in the Favorites key.

Hope this helps,

Hi Don, so then I should conclude from your answer that the same registry
method works fine for IE7 as well? In the Favorites registry key I only see
two subkeys: a (Default) REG_SZ and an Order REG_BINARY. You mean that the
"Order REG_BINARY" subkey contains the sort order info? Thanks

WYSIWYG, AFAIK.

Sorry, incomplete answer on my part. The DWORD "Order" for Favorites would
contain the sort order for folders and Favorites which aren't in a
sub-folder. Sort order for a sub-folder of favorites would be the DWORD
"Order" for that sub-folder.

At any rate, exporting the [...Explorer\MenuOrder\Favorites] key should
export the sort order for all Favorites.

FAVORITES MOVE TO NEW COMPUTER AND KEEP ORIGINAL SORT ORDER

on old computer in ie go to file/export and export favs. copy (not import
yet) that file to new computer.

on old computer go to regedit
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Favorites

r click favorites and export. copy that file to new computer.

on new computer in explore delete all items in favorites.
right click start /properties/customise remove tick from display favorites.
open ie and import the exported favorites file. close ie.
in regedit got to above and delete the whole favorites key then double click
the .reg file you saved from old computer and it will put it in the favorites
key but with the order from the old computer.
right click start /properties/customise replace tick in display favorites.
