Apparently IE 7 uses the same type of file structure that windows operating
systems use...They are in an ordered state....usually in numeric, alpha
ordered...IE 7, stores your favorites as files on your computer, but does not
keep the favorites in a customized value system..therefore, no-matter how you
do it, it will alsways show in a numeric, alpha sort in your browser.

Internet Explorer actually saves a user's favorites as individual files in
the user's favorites folder located in the file system. This means that
favorites are subject to the same A user's favorites are subject to same file
naming restrictions as other files are. Forbidden characters in a bookmark's
title will be converted before being saved
The favorites center has three collections the user can choose from:
Favorites (web pages bookmarked by the user), Feeds (RSS feeds the user is
subscribed to), and History (previous web pages the user has visited).
User's can create folders in the "Favorites" and "RSS feeds" collections
within favorites center through the following methods:
1. Right-click on an existing bookmark or folder and select "Create new
folder" from the popup menu. Right-clicking on empty space didn't display a
popup ment.
2. Click the button and select "Organize Favorites" from its drop down
menu. Click the "New Folder" button in the dialog that appears.
3. Using Explorer, create a new folder in the favorites folder itself
since Internet Explorer mirrors the contents of this folder.
Currently there is no way for a user to search through their favorites in
Internet Explorer. However, they can use Windows XP's built-in search since
their favorites are actually individual files saved within the file system.
Internet Explorer supports displaying a user's favorites on its toolbar. Any
favorites saved in the "Links" folder under the "Favorites" collection within
the favorites center, will appear on Internet Explorer's toolbar. Any folders
of favorites in the "Links" folder will be treated as a drop down menu when
clicked. The drop down menu lacks the option to open all web pages in the
folder as tabs.

Don, that's the whole point of this thread. Yes, both machines have the same
OS (WinXP Pro SP2). But that registry line has the favorites listed in custom
order when IE6 is installed, but lists them alphabetically (not in custom
order) when IE7 is installed. So the question is then how to backup custom
sort order when IE7 is installed.

Hi,
Are you wanting to move Favorites and a custom sort order to another
machine?
This key
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOr
der\Favorites] should contain the current sort order.
Same OS on both machines?

Don, yes, that registry line is present in both IE6 and IE7. The difference
is that in IE6 that registry line shows the CUSTOM order of the Favorites
whereas in IE7 that same registry line shows the Favorites in ALPHABETICAL
order, so I'm not sure if backing up that registry line in IE7 will restore
the custom order of favorites.

Hi,
The same method should work with IE7 on XP or Vista. That registry key is
still present in both OS's.
How can I backup the IE7 Favorites sort order ? In IE6 I always used the
method below:
"In order to have the sort order applied to the other PC, export the
following registry from the source PC:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrd
er\Favorites
Save the above key as a REG file and apply this in the other computer. The
sort order is now copied/overwritten."
