IE7 - Favorites list problem

I realize this is forum for IE6. but I didnt see a place for IE7 posts....so,
here goes:

I use XP Home, SP2, and run IE7. For some reason, when I go to a site that I
want to save in my Favorites list (www.google.com, or www.worldstart.com, for
example), I do the pulldown from Favorites in the toolbar, and select 'Save
To Favorites'. This seems to work, and I can return to my Favorites list in
my Start menu and click on the site and return there....the problem is, it
seems that after using some of these url's a couple of times, when I click on
them i get a message that says, " The target "" of this Internet Shortcut is
not valid. Go to the Internet Shortcut property sheet and make sure the
target is correct. " I don't know why this occurs, but it is quite
aggravating and frustrating to have to re-search, find the right site again,
then re-add to Favorites, only to have it happen again within the next couple
of days, as they are sites I visit frequently, which is why I saved to
Favorites in the first place... any help here?

Hi,
First clear the Temporary Internet Files and History- it may not help, but
it's an easy first step.

Then, you may have an incompatible browser add-on.
See: http://www.enhanceie.com/ie/troubleshoot.asp
for troubleshooting information.

The troublesome program may not show up as an add-on. Disable other
security, privacy, ad-blocking programs to see if one of them is causing the
problem. Any program that interacts with Internet Explorer could be causing
this. The connection with IE may not be obvious, such as Google Desktop.

A firewall will probably not be causing this problem, but be sure to turn on
the Windows Firewall from Control Panel> Windows Firewall before disabling a
third-party firewall or security suite during testing.

Note: Norton/Symantec software is not above suspicion.

You may have a bad install of IE7. Uninstall and reinstall following the
advice at
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html It is very important to have
antivirus and antispyware programs disabled during the installation.
Download IE7 from
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx Don't allow
Windows Update to install it.

Hope this helps,
Don

You're using the web interface for newsgroups. Which portal are you using?
(e.g. post the URL now in your Address bar.) In any case do you see in your list
on the left an item called Internet Explorer General?

Search on the above newsgroup (e.g. press Alt-7 and type) AntiVir
(as a specific example of what Don is telling you about interfering third-party
programs.) Also search there (or on Google Groups) for Favorites "Read-Only".

http://groups.google.com/group/micr...explorer.general&rnum=1&#doc_7fdd4f78efdc20c0

(Google Groups search for
Favorites "read-only" group:microsoft.*.internetexplorer.general
)

Hmm... There must be something wrong with Google's news archive.
There should be way more hits than this and not all mentioning favicons.

Unfortunately, when posts in threads don't get marked or voted on their threads
eventually lose retention in the web interface's archive (but supposedly not in
Google's archive). So, there are threads from last year when this issue
was more current which may not be found in either archive.
