Problem using Twain - XP problem?

Hi,

For no apparent reason, I can no longer access my scanner.

It used to work perfectly with Epscan II and Twain. Then without any
prior notice, just stopped working.

The scanner is present correctly in the Control Panel-Scanners and
Cameras. It also appears correctly in the Device Manager. Its Scsi card
also appears correctly in Device Manager.

When I click on File-Select Source, I get the message "Epson Twain is
not installed". When I click on Acquire, I get the message "An error has
occurred in Epson Twain".

I have repeatedly uninstalled and re-installed the scanner and its
software. The files all appear to install correctly, and can be seen in
my System Partition. But the scanner does not work, and no longer shows
up as being accessible in application software which uses it.

I would appreciate any suggestions as to where to look to correct this
situation, especially as Christmas is near and I need to to scan-in and
print images on my cards.

Many thanks

Rex

This isn't exactly an answer, but maybe some useful information. I'm using
an Epson Perfection1260 scannerwith a usb connection, and the same thing
happened..... worked fine, then quit. I uninstalled/reinstalled Epson Smart
Panel and Epson Twain 4 times, no installation errors or anything but still
wouldn't work. I sent messages to these newsgroups with no response, and 5
or 6 messages to Epson support and Microsoft support, and they said the only
solution was to do a windows repair install! I haven't done that yet because
that not only wipes out all your settings but can often cause other problems
with other applications!
However .... I did find a way to keep scanning. I turn the scanner
on, go to control panel (you can also make a shortcut to your desktop), go
to "scanners and cameras", right click on the scanner, select "get picture
using scanner wizard". That doesn't have as many options as Smart Panel, but
it works! It uses the WIA driver in XP, not twain. I also don't know if it
will work with all scanners, but you can try it and see.
Good Luck!

Many thanks for your useful response.

Of course, I have not yet been able solve the problem, but agree with
you that a new install or repair install is much too extreme a step to
take, and will surely introduce other problems.

My workaround is to move the scanner to my other computer, on my two
computer network. This computer has the same operating system, but far
fewer programs installed. My guess is that some other program is
interfering with the scanner software. Or else the frequent use of a
registry cleaner has knocked out some essential element.

Rex.
